I was thinking it might be helpful to create a forum for parts/service where people can post recommendations on local shops that are "autocross" friendly.

Hmmm... So, this would be opinions and reccomendations from autocrossers? Is that what you had in mind? As long as it doesn't turn into a place to bash businesses, I wouldn't be against adding another forum for that purpose.

I am also planning on putting together a "sponsor" area (not part of the forum) where autox/racing related businesses can advertise specials and that sort of thing. I kind of envision pages of coupons, a discount if you mention you saw our ad, or something like that. I've already had some inquiries for something like that and I think it would be pretty cool to basically have a directory of businesses that you know are interested in racers.

I was thinking it would be more of a reference source. Particularly helpful for new autocrossers.

For example:

eXtreme Performance-
Owner: Navid Kahangi (ESP Evo8)
Wide range of Performance and towing parts
Installation service
Most familiar with BMWs and Evos

Edge Motorworks-
Owner: Gordon White (DSP BMW 325), and numerous autocrosser employees
Performance BMW and Mini parts
Installation service
Dyno services
Most familar with BMWs and Minis

So, more like a Bay Area autocrosser's yellow pages. I like it! I will be doing some work on the site this weekend and I'll plan for something like that. Great idea!

Thanks!

It doesn't count when they're there just to get some LED Nozzles installed. Razz

2 Seconds 2 Seconds I think this would be a great idea. I would love to find a good alignment shop that does good custom alignments.

I now have a permanent home for the site set up and the new server is nearly ready to go. My goal is to have the permanent stuff in place by early next week and then I need to do a bunch of stuff to get the site ready for use. The forum won't look or feel any different than it does now. All the messages, your personal settings, etc will all be migrated over to the new platform. There will be approximately 1 hour of downtime while I do the migration, though. I'll announce it in advance and do the work on some odd hour to minimize the visible downtime.

Now for the cool stuff! The new server has way more disk space and I am setting it up purposely for this site and only this site. So, this gives me a lot of flexibility that I currently don't have. The forum software has some cool email features that I plan to test and hopefully enable if they work well. I am panning on starting essentially a "Racing/Autocross Yellow Pages" where you can look for your alignment shop, tuner, parts supplier, etc. I also plan to contact those companies and see if they want to post some specials, coupons, etc so that you can also get a deal with them. I can't commit to any special deals, but I'll be going to bat for us and do the best I can.

I was also thinking about having a "review" feature that you will be able to post your experiences with the various companies listed on the site. I know the first thing I always ask is "how good are these guys?" I envision something like Amazon's book reviews, but I won't make it so blatently commercial and try to get you to buy other stuff Razz

If you have other suggestions regarding this "Yellow Pages" concept, I'm eager to hear them, so please don't hesitate to reply to this thread. I have some other cool stuff in the pipeline too, so please stay tuned!

Dave
