Brian, people in positions of decision-making find it a lot easier to just say "no" than actually have to do something.

Stay positive everyone, no matter how "shitty" it can be.

Funny if they mentioned the word "motorsports". Aren't those toys in the sky powered by some sort of motor?

Dan, have they given any concrete reason? (no pun intended)

Have we tried to get SCCA National site acquisition folks involved to, maybe, get a fresh look from the Castle management?

It is frustrating. There are so many airfield sites, like Blytheville, Devens etc that other regions get to run on and we can't get in to either Castle or Crow's Landing. Sad

Mike,

The reason given it that the concrete will break up over time. I believe this is also what Jesus (AAS) was told. The hot tires pick up the tar and increasingly expose the joints between the concrete blocks. Once exposed the tires will gradually break off the edges of the thick concrete pads when cornering.

Castle management is not willing to have that happen as long as there is hope of having something flight related come to the area. They do have a couple of long-shot possibilities.

An offer to fence the area has been made so access to the runways is not an issue. But, an estimate to re-tar the entire ramp I am told came to over a million dollars. I could do it cheaper with a bucket but it would take a long time.

Castle is fully aware of SCCA's use of active fields, of our insurance, and excellent track record. That is not the issue at this time. We'll keep asking, politely, without being a pain but it is their decision whether we like it or not.

Crows Landing is very different but there's nothing right now to report.

Can't we use fencing to block off the problem areas on the tarmac? We now have fences to block off the flight line and "active runways" at marina.

Hell, even if we could get half the space at atwater, it would still offer some of the best places to run.

Yeah, I did notice the fence at Marina, that's what happened.

Just a thought, and you guys have probably already done this, but since Castle is owned by Merced County you could approach the Board of Supervisors, or the supervisor of the district that the base is in, and approach it from that angle. The airport manager is only looking at a pretty narrow perspective of the issue.

Understanding that Chico is too far for any regional events...but, seeing as we have no site for a Tour or Pro and it kills me...

Someone refresh my memory on the linked airfield below, please? (I vaguely remember discussing it a number of years ago...want to say the surface is too far gone...it is 2700' x 2700' !!)

Mike : from what I remember on that Chico site, you're correct. The surface is too far gone.
