My last advice on this:

Glenn - I completely agree with this. I'm just trying to decide whether I want a 1.6 or a 1.8, which is a bit more fundamental, I think. Leaning towards 1.6 at the moment, but that may be weather dependent and what I had for lunch

Id like to see someone local build one because I think it can do well in the class
even though it kind of ugly haha
its real light lighter then the miatas, decent power, its different haha

I seriously doubt I could get one for $2k. Trust me, I did think about it, and part of me, the part that likes to be different and the underdog, would rather do the MR2-Spyder. I have a G35 in FS.. what does that tell you?
So I went out and drove an 95 NA and a 2005 NB. I was in Half Moon Bay, so traffic was bad and I couldn't get a sense for handling, but they really did feel the same, for the most part. NB had a little more room inside. I was suprised at the power to weight.
Glenn, I like your advice. I can see how one could easily get bogged down in the all of the I-need-this or that as far as options and what not. I'll just see what I come across, but the shortnose crank does scare me... not that I plan on having this car for a long time, but still.

An MR-S does sound cool for STR, but those things seem to keep their value too much. Of course I still salivate over a '84-'89 911 3.2 coupe for STR, but those are in the $15k+ range for anything decent.
As for Miatae, I am partial to the extra torque of the 1.8L, it's just enough extra to get the engine out of a bog situation in low RPM's. When we are talking about at the most 130WHP for an STS miata, wheel spin can be easily dialed out with suspension tuning... GGF not included unfortunately.

I've owned two 1.6s and two NBs (both '99s), and loved them all. Never owned a 94-97, but I can't imagine they are too bad .
And it's not really the power-to-weight; miatas are NOT fast in a straight line (well, without some help anyway); they just FEEL fast . It's really fun to rip off the line at a light, row through some gears, really flying along, look down.... and you're going 45, and can fling the car right by the cop with the radar gun with no worries .

PS: the shortnose crankshaft thing has affected a tiny, tiny % of the early cars, and generally happens after someone takes the thing apart and puts it back together again with an issue; don't disturb the crankshaft and the engine will probably run nearly forever. The 99s had a different issue -- also affecting a tiny % of engines, any of which will have died by now (that problem became evident early in the engine's life). Nothing is perfect, but these things are REALLY reliable, and if the worst happens the engines are even cheap. Just keep enough oil in them.

Probably the best thing about these cars, aside from how fun they are to drive. They don't break often, and when they do they're inexpensive to repair. Plus you have to really TRY to hurt a Miata. Take it from someone who's tried.

2 1.6 NA's (91A's), 2 R-Package NA's (94+95). I never did understand the new-fangled 99's
At least do yourself the favor of driving the correct car for the class, before choosing whatever you buy.
