I may return to the 25th. Last time was a blast and worth the money. I just have to decide if I want to get up even earlier since I'll be coming from SLO this time.

The autox event on January 4th was really good! Low attendance numbers (15-20 cars) made for lots of runs, no need for designated run groups, and fairly lax management. However, the past event on January 25th was very different, and I think some areas need to be addressed.
~50 cars in attendance in two run groups alternating every half hour on a ~35 second course made it so that most drivers only got two runs in each 30 minute session. I suggest re-evaluating number of run groups, session time, and/or maximum number of participants (total at event or per run group). It looked like there were also some track drivers who thought they could just come over to run through our autox course between their sessions and knock over cones.
I was a bit concerned about safety and communication, as well. It was not clearly briefed at what point were cars allowed on the course before the event started. There was potential for cars to run towards each other at the beginning of the first run group. It's one thing for a participant to do donuts in the paddock or get too loose while drifting on course, but it's another to see an event organizer ride around the course on the hood of a car to pick up cones.
The events need some more organization.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend this last event, so we had some stand-in helpers run it. Future events will return to the format that we had over the January 3/4 weekend. We've talked about moving to a two run group format and options are being explored on how to get cars through more quickly. We do cap the event at 50 cars, so we have quite a few options. The Jan 25 attendance was about the same as the Jan 3 event, so we're looking in to things that can be done better to improve efficiency. Thanks for the feedback!

I am really glad you posted your thoughts, as I reached out to the organizer(s) with the exact same comments. Jan 3/4 was perhaps one of the best AutoX event I've attended in my life--minimal waiting, low attendance, lots of laps, never felt unsafe. Whereas Jan 24/25 was horrible!
Here is what I emailed the organizers:
Quote:
The previous event (01/03) was perhaps the best autocross event I've ever attended. This last one (01/25), not so much!
Three main concerns:
(1) It was a bit too crowded. If possible, I would suggest doubling the fee ($100) and reducing the max participants by half--yesterday I was getting 2-3 runs per 30 minute session if I was lucky, with the rest spent idling in line. The paddock area is quite small, but it would be perfect for 25 drivers.
(2) There were drifters that were taking 2-3x as long on their runs, and hitting multiple cones each and every run (and then shutting down the course for minutes at a time to fix the cones)... I talked to a handful of other drivers there and everyone felt that the course was setup for the drifters and not for the actual autocrossers, although the latter group made up 95% of the drivers.
(3) Safety. The drifters were racing way past the finish line and/or doing donuts in the waiting/lineup area after their runs. A few drivers were also starting their runs early, which led to multiple car-on-car WOT approaches...
I see Dave responded that he's bringing things back on track. Much appreciated and looking forward to the next event!
