For the record, all of the Marina events hosted by Santa Clara Corvettes will be open to non-Corvettes for 2014.

Greetings all,

Ive done a bit of auto-x at Marina but haven't been down there for a year or so due to family stuff and working on my car. I was very upset to learn of this the other day. I'd bet a $1 to a bag of donuts there are houses going in near that parking ramp sometime soon if construction hasn't already begun. Ugh....

This is awful for people that live in the Monterrey Bay region but no great shakes for SF Bay folks either as it represents the third lost site in just over a year (Great America, Candlestick and now Marina).

While I assume that many potential sites have been explored in the past, it does seem that there's been some developments with respect to who owns/manages various vast sheets of pavement that might make it worthwhile to explore some of them anew.

At any rate, Tesla now runs the old NUMI plant in Fremont. They aren't using the big North lot. Might be a chance they'd be amenable to it's use as they seem to have a pretty robust performance culture among their employees: https://www.google.com/maps/place/45...6e26a14c243e97

Pacific rail depot in Milpitas (pretty sure this is still in use though): https://www.google.com/maps/place/65...8e66bfd64ef337

Also in Fremont, this lot isn't far from NUMI and IIRC used to belong to NUMI as well. Access appears to be via the wrecking yard property to the North: https://www.google.com/maps/place/6799+Weber+Rd/@37.5025426, -121.9896587,790m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x808fc75e597d 98ed:0x4e6db48f4e2af05f

The lot at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds? https://www.google.com/maps/place/441+Tully+Rd/@37.305227,-1 21.853729,792m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x808e32e24c19efd d:0xc8ad0a942f28d8b5 or San Jose Muni (kinda small) https://www.google.com/maps/place/San+Jose+Municipal+Stadium /@37.320562,-121.862488,792m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x8 08e332f2fca9abd:0x95d3759e131b5a28

Slightly further afield is this collection of lots in Tracy, CA: https://www.google.com/maps/place/18599+Stanford+Rd/@37.7343 199,-121.543436,788m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x80901f569 763d105:0x88b8b0de4534d7f2

The holy grail is of course Moffett Field. Now that Google runs it perhaps there might be a chance? I know that Apple has a sports car club, not sure if Google has anything similar, but if they do, that might be a place to start. The ramp to the North of Hangers 1 & 2 would be ideal, but might be too close to the ANG, the hangar 1 ramp is likely too close to active runways. The ramp at the F Lane hangar (where the Google execs sometimes park their jets) perhaps?

...anyway, here's hoping that this offers some small help or at least sparks someone else's creativity to locate some new venues.

The Tesla spot looks great but with houses close by may not work but for maybe once or twice a year, better then nothing though.

Pacific Rail Depot maybe not, still shows it being used but thing do change.

Santa Clara Fairgrounds, We have run there before and the surface is pure garbage, lots of gravel and small.

The Tracy lot looks as though this would be the best bet, looks very big, and could be very bumpy. I'll take a drive up there on Monday and ask some general question and hopefully be able to see the surface.

Like you said Moffett would be the Holy grail, Diane knows some people at Google that may helps us out, she going to talk to them on Monday for us, that would be great.

Like I said about Tesla if some of these site could offer us one or two dates a year that could be 3 to 6 events at different sites and maybe work into a great relationship with the site owners that could net us long term usage.

The nearest residential to the Tesla lot is clear the other side of 680. Pacific Rail has homes near by...probably a very thin (at best) shot.

Fingers crossed.

Please remember that is has been specifically requested of the general population of SFR autocrossers that we do not take any action upon ourselves, such as driving out somewhere and asking questions about a possible site. It very well could destroy a deal in the works. Please also remember that there is not a single piece of sizable asphalt or concrete in Nor Cal that has not been looked at previously or is not being looked at currently.

Please let those who are responsibly for procuring sites do it.

Who would that be exactly? Don't take this as a sleight but from the customer perspective, I'm not sure the current strategy is working super well. I'm new to this forum and maybe haven't figured out the nuances of the search utility but I'm having trouble finding updates from that group (whomever it is) on the progress toward securing new venues. If that info exists, please by all means, let me know where to view it.

FWIW, I spun by the North lot at the old NUMI plant today at lunch. It was being used by the Fremont PD for driver training. Looks like three-ish different surfaces. A narrow band of concrete at the far north, a smaller patch (less than 1/3 of the total) of older asphalt at the west that is fenced in and the lions share is relativity nice sealed asphalt. There is a shallow drainage depression that bisects a portion of it and a fair number of light poles, but not a horrific number. Weed intrusion in the cracks as to be expected in a lot that's gone mostly unused for a few years. 5-10 dudes with flat bladed shovels could clean that up in a day, easily.

Had a friendly chat with one of the PD trainers and the security guy. I have a POC and a phone number. Perhaps someone from an organization who's had recent success in gaining access to a site might contact me for the number.

What Dan said

Yes, these sites just mentioned are (well and previously) known.

No, random visits will not help.

Yes, some things are in motion (and yes, with multiple clubs working together behind the scenes)

No, going into details on public forums won't help. Quite the opposite in fact.

Ed, you know I both respect and trust your judgment, but it might help to give an example or two of how these well intentioned efforts can blow up in our (collective) face? New folks coming in to the site conversation likely won't have the full context Smile
